My Journey as an English Teacher
Life is full of journeys big and small. This is the story of my teaching journey:
-Matt from Charles River English
The Beginning
In 2013 I became a volunteer teacher in Lynn MA, a city north of Boston. While there, I taught English learners at Lynn Classical High School and Catholic Charities North.
It was incredibly rewarding to be able to teach students who had immigrated from places all over the world, and soon after I received my English as a second language (ESL) Massachusetts teaching certification. During the following 3 years I taught students who were from more than 35 countries and spoke many different languages!
Becoming an English tutor in Central America
A few years later I took the opportunity to teach teenagers living in the capital city of Guatemala.
The school was in a neighborhood of the city that had high levels of poverty, but my amazing students were very resilient. They were determined to succeed, and I felt lucky to teach them the English they needed to have a future with positive opportunities.
Helping international students get accepted into colleges and universities
When I returned to the United States, I taught adult learners for almost 4 years at the Boston International Academy. I helped students raise their English levels, write college application essays, and pass the TOEFL test.
While I was teaching, I was also learning! At night I took classes at Cambridge College so I could complete my master’s degree in teaching English as a second language.
Starting Charles River English
In 2022 my journey took a new and exciting path when I decided to start my own independent English tutoring business.
I am looking forward to using all my past teaching experiences to help you on your English learning journey!
